Characters in Philosopher’s Stone that ended up being important later

Newt Scamander

Need we say more? Newt Scamander was another name that appeared on Harry’s reading list, having penned the definitive volume on magical creatures. His book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (complete with handwritten annotations from Harry and friends), was also published in the Muggle world and raised quite a bit for Comic Relief. Of course, that wouldn’t be the last we’d hear of Newt’s adventures.

Griphook

On Harry’s first visit to Gringotts, Griphook was the one who escorted him through the vaults. Who would have thought that years later, the same goblin would be helping Harry to stage a daring break-in? Griphook was one of the captives at Malfoy Manor who’d been kidnapped along with a group of fugitives.

His assistance was pivotal in retrieving one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, Hufflepuff’s cup, though admittedly Griphook’s intentions might have fallen short of honourable.

Scabbers

Ron’s ‘stupid, fat rat’ was with him on the Hogwarts Express, briefly taking time out from his busy napping schedule to bite Goyle’s finger.

It’s bizarre re-reading these segments knowing that he was a wizard the entire time. ‘Scabbers’ was exposed as the Animagus Peter Pettigrew – and the person who framed Sirius – towards the end of Prisoner of Azkaban. From there on, he assisted Voldemort in his second rise to power. We preferred him as a rat.

Grindelwald

Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times, Professor Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the Dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon’s blood and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

That’s right – the darkest wizard of his time, Gellert Grindelwald, got his first mention on a Chocolate Frog card. In fact, we heard precious little else about him until when we learned of his connection to Dumbledore and the Deathly Hallows.

After Grindelwald was revealed as the antagonist in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), and with four more films to come, it looks like we’ll be learning much more.
